The Southbrook Traction Engine Club was formed in 1958 and now has the largest number of traction engines of any club in New Zealand.

'Steam at Southbrook' Book - The first 50 years of the Southbrook Traction Engine Club
In 1958 enthusiasts in North Canterbury, New Zealand, held the country's first traction engine rally and delighted the nation as the brought steam traction back from the brink. Many of their forebears were the early farmers, contractors, sawmillers and engineers of a new colony developed out of dust and wind during the heyday of the Victoria age of steam. This explains why steam remains strong in southern New Zealand, with some of the world's finest lineups of vintage farm and steam machinery. Following the outstanding success of that first rally, the Southbrook Traction Engine Club was formed. This book celebrates the clubs first fifty years; the driver and their families, engines and the machinery they drive; restoration, rallying and overseas tours. It also traces the place of stream in the history of Canterbury and shows how steam build the pastoral wealth of a new colony.
